Key Risks and Why Leashing Matters:
Moose, elk, and deer — These large animals (especially mothers with young) may charge if they perceive a dog as a predator. A single kick or charge can cause serious injury or death to a dog — and sometimes to people nearby.
Black bears — Bears are usually shy, but a dog barking, chasing, or startling one can trigger defensive behavior. Bears may see small dogs as prey or competitors.
Mountain lions (cougars) — Though rare to encounter, lions are present and view small-to-medium dogs as potential prey. An unleashed dog running ahead could draw unwanted attention.
Other wildlife (coyotes, bobcats, etc.) may react aggressively to dogs that wander off.
Essential Guidelines for Dogs at Sharlene Heights:
Keep dogs leashed at all times — Use a short leash (6 feet or less recommended) and never allow off-leash roaming, even on our private acreage. This protects your dog, other guests, wildlife, and prevents accidental chases into the forest.
Supervise closely — Never leave dogs unattended, especially during setup, cocktail hour, or when guests are mingling. Designate a handler (not the wedding couple!) to manage them.
Secure food, trash, and scents — Dogs (and wildlife) are attracted to catering smells. Keep pets away from food areas and use bear-proof containers for waste.
Prepare for the environment — Bring water, waste bags, a portable crate/kennel for rest times, and check for ticks/insects after outdoor play. Consider your dog's temperament — high-energy or prey-driven dogs may need extra restraint.
What to do in a wildlife encounter with your dog:
Stay calm, leash/restrain your dog immediately.
Back away slowly while facing the animal; speak firmly.
For bears or lions: Make yourself and your group appear large; do NOT run.
Report any close or concerning sightings to venue staff right away.
Bringing your dog can add such joy to your day — we've seen countless sweet ring-bearer pups and photo ops! — but responsible leashing and awareness keep everyone safe in this wild, beautiful setting.
If you're planning to bring pets (dogs or otherwise), let us know early so we can share any venue-specific tips or restrictions. Venue staff are familiar with local wildlife patterns and happy to help.
Your Sharlene Heights celebration will be magical, paws and all — let's make it safe for every guest, furry or feathered!
Warmly, Sharlene Heights Team
Wild Life Awareness
Sharlene Heights Weddings & Events is proud to be a pet-friendly venue (with prior approval — please discuss any plans to bring dogs with us in advance so we can ensure everything goes smoothly). Many couples love including their furry family members in the celebration, and our 160-acre property in the heart of Pike National Forest offers plenty of space for them to enjoy the day too.
However, being surrounded by true wilderness means extra caution is needed when bringing dogs. Wildlife here is active and can view unleashed or roaming dogs as threats (or prey in some cases), leading to potential conflicts that endanger both your pet and the animals. Colorado Parks and Wildlife and U.S. Forest Service guidelines strongly emphasize protecting pets and wildlife in these areas.
